Tammy turns north-westward to the east of Dominica

The Trinidad and To­ba­go Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Ser­vice has con­firmed that Hur­ri­cane Tam­my will re­main a hur­ri­cane for a few more days while it pass­es near or over the Lee­ward Is­lands.

In its lat­est ad­vi­so­ry, the Met Ser­vice re­ports that at 5:00 am to­day (Sat­ur­day 21 Oc­to­ber 2023), the cen­tre of Hur­ri­cane Tam­my was lo­cat­ed near 15.2ON 60.4OW, or about 100 km east-south­east of Do­mini­ca.

“Hur­ri­cane Tam­my is now mov­ing to­ward the north­west near 15 km/h and this gen­er­al mo­tion is ex­pect­ed to con­tin­ue through tonight,” the Met Ser­vice ex­plains in the ad­vi­so­ry. “A turn to­ward the north-north­west is fore­cast on Sun­day fol­lowed by a turn to­ward the north on Mon­day.”

“On the fore­cast track, the cen­tre of Tam­my will move near or over por­tions of the Lee­ward Is­lands through ear­ly Sun­day and then move north of the north­ern Lee­ward Is­lands by Sun­day af­ter­noon,” it said.

The Met Ser­vice notes that max­i­mum sus­tained winds are near 130 km/h with high­er gusts.

“Fluc­tu­a­tions in in­ten­si­ty are pos­si­ble dur­ing the next few days but Tam­my is ex­pect­ed to re­main a hur­ri­cane while it pass­es near or over the Lee­ward Is­lands,” the Met Ser­vice said.

It not­ed: “Hur­ri­cane-force winds ex­tend out­ward up to 35 km from the cen­tre and trop­i­cal-storm-force winds ex­tend out­ward up to 205 km. The es­ti­mat­ed min­i­mum cen­tral pres­sure is 991 mb.”
