October 27, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles of Nigeria have maintained their ranking of 40th place globally and 6th in Africa, according to the latest FIFA world rankings released in October 2023. The lack of movement comes despite Nigeria’s 3-2 friendly victory over Mozambique on October 16, their first win in a friendly match in almost five years.
The top three positions remain unchanged, with Argentina at number one, followed by France and Brazil. The rankings, published on FIFA’s official website, reflect the results from 165 international matches played earlier in the month including World Cup qualifiers, continental competitions and CONCACAF Nations League games.
While the win over Mozambique did not improve their ranking, the Super Eagles have an opportunity to move up the table when the CAF 2023 FIFA World Cup qualifiers kick off in November. With qualifying matches carrying more weight in the rankings calculations, victories could boost Nigeria’s global standing.

For now, the team remains stationary worldwide and on the continent. Their ranking reflects stagnancy amidst a packed football calendar. The Super Eagles will be hoping their upcoming World Cup qualifiers provide an avenue to improve their position.
