On the joyous occasion of Christmas, more than 500 people in New Brunswick were left in the dark, not metaphorically, but quite literally. The holiday spirit was challenged by a power outage, a disruption that underscored the difficulties residents and utility services encounter during such events. Particularly given the timing of the celebration, the inconvenience was felt deeply.

Storm Wreaks Havoc

A wind storm that swept through New Brunswick resulted in a power outage that initially affected over 1,000 residents. In the days leading up to Christmas, some houses remained without power for as long as five days. The storm inflicted extensive damage, causing trees to collapse onto power lines. One family had to resort to using a generator to power essential appliances and to keep the Christmas lights twinkling.

Restoration Efforts

NB Power, the utility company, worked tirelessly to restore electricity. By Sunday evening, they had managed to restore power to 98% of the affected customers. However, the struggle to bring back the light was far from over. On Christmas Eve, around 1,500 NB Power customers remained without electricity, predominantly in rural parts of Charlotte County. Close to 355 power crews were on the ground, working to reconnect power. It is estimated that more than 125,000 customers had experienced a power outage at least once during the stormy week.

Community Response

Warming reception centers remained open in areas with power outages, providing a measure of comfort in a difficult situation. Local volunteers and first responders were conducting official safety checks. The outage inevitably led to extra expenses for some residents, adding to the strain of the situation. Despite the challenges, the effort to restore power continued with determination. Even on Christmas Day, crews were tirelessly working to address complex repairs and restore power to the areas of Charlotte southwest and central York Sunbury.
