Orion Academy Triumphs in Spirited Debate on Carnival Culture in Dominica

In the heart of Dominica, a spirited debate unfolded at the UWI Global Campus Dominica, where the essence of Carnival’s cultural significance was put under the microscope. On February 23, teams from Convent High School and Orion Academy engaged in a thought-provoking discussion, challenging whether the vibrant Carnival celebrations have strayed too far from their traditional roots, succumbing to hypersexualization. This event marked the second round of the much-anticipated Inter-Secondary Debating Competition.

The Heart of the Debate

Representing Convent High School, Thérèse Le Blanc and Nia Williams took a firm stance, arguing that the essence of Dominica’s Carnival has been overshadowed by commercially-driven, sexually explicit themes, diluting the cultural and traditional values that once stood at its core. They pointed to the diminishing presence of Ole Mas, a traditional masquerade that humorously comments on societal issues, as evidence of this cultural shift.

On the flip side, Dymond Daniel and Éhjadi Maxwell of Orion Academy painted a different picture. They celebrated Carnival’s evolution as a month-long festival that warmly embraces both traditional and contemporary elements, catering to a diverse audience across all age groups. They highlighted the inclusivity and cultural representation that still thrives within the event, arguing that it remains a vibrant showcase of Dominica’s rich heritage.

The judges were swayed by Orion Academy’s compelling defense, awarding them the win in this closely contested debate. Dymond Daniel, with her articulate presentation and deep understanding of the topic, was honored with the Best Speaker award. This victory propels Orion Academy into the semi-finals, scheduled for March 18, promising another round of engaging discussions and insightful arguments.
