Our hometowns are where our roots lie. For some, it’s where their ancestors were born. My roots lie in the Hub City: New Brunswick. The Hub City is given its name because it is shaped around Rutgers University, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Saint Peter’s University Hospital. It is a “bandaid” city.
This very large city extends from Livingston Avenue to Rutgers Douglass Campus. It runs 5.75 square miles and is not just limited to being a bandaid city. It also highlights art, science and culture.
My hometown has drastically changed within the last 19 years. Growing up, I have always been exposed to small residences and public areas. There’s the Tropical Supermarket, which did not smell too tropical. Super Fresco bodega was down the street, and the owner made me feel at home. If I wanted to borrow books, the public library was my go-to. The only con about the public library is that it always looked gloomy and unfortunately smells of old carpet. Downtown New Brunswick is where the city is full of life. Last but not least, there is Boyd Park. This park is fairly small, but made big memories for me as a child.
Nonetheless, there is more to New Brunswick than the aforementioned areas nearby home. Buccleuch Park is familiar to many locals. It is within walking distance from Saint Peter’s University Hospital. At this particular park, you are able to take advantage of various amenities. A few include volleyball nets, tennis courts and walking trails with beautiful sceneries. You casually feel at peace when in this park. The short, high sounds of chirps from birds come in random bursts that put a smile on your face. The fresh smell of cut grass dances around your nose. The park is well-maintained and trash is not disposed of carelessly. The inflorescence of bright flowers sparkle in your eyes. The natural phenomena of nature goes beyond attractiveness.
There are also local restaurants that have enchanting food options and aesthetics. A prime example would be Stage Left Steak. At this upscale restaurant, “finger looking good” is not just an expression. This restaurant is a true staple when it comes to dining. Stage Left Steak has a warm and cozy environment that offers the best steak. Their steaks are tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. Without a doubt, the steak is high quality. The beefy taste is bold and distinctive to many food critics like me. Your taste buds become enlightened by the savory goodness. Hand-crafted wine is offered to compliment your meal. The mastermind behind this local gem has got it down.
The city is full of life. There are multiple pubs and forms of artisanship that highlights the aptitude of the all-inclusive city. Tavern on George is an open gastropub, a pub that not only offers alcoholic beverages, but also has food options available. A lot of Rutgers’ students come here to relax and catch up with friends. There are also late-night musicians that open your mind to the complex harmony and syncopated rhythms of jazz. Indoor and outdoor seating is offered.
New Brunswick’s sublime murals also have a tendency of enhancing public and private settings. A mural that can’t be missed is “Una Gota Rompe La Piedra” on French and Handy Street. The most significant form of expression emerges through this generous work of art. With its abstract design, captivating texture and compelling bright colors, this mural explores the heartfelt history of a large Latino community. Admiring this mural gives you the illusion that you are in a different utopia. A wall mural can have a large impact on visual interest and this piece of art’s beauty enhances the city of New Brunswick.
Gradually, New Brunswick is becoming innovative. There are a variety of project plans on deck to improve the atmosphere and diversity of the city. There are hopes of building a technology hub. There is also a plan to lean towards a $49 million train station makeover. As a final note, there are intentions of creating a very first dog park. New and exciting advancements are coming to the thriving city, which leaves room to grow and prosper while supporting diverse talents.
Hub City is where all the festivities occur. Residents, students and visitors have various opportunities to interact with and experience a creative culture every turn they make. Skyscrapers dance with the sky, new innovations are making their way to the city, and the community shines a light on phenomenal operations to keep residents on their feet.
