NEW BRUNSWICK – Could George Street between Bayard and Albany streets become a permanent pedestrian mall, offering outdoor dining, performances and festivals?
And if so, what would the impact be on traffic, emergency vehicle access, NJ Transit and Rutgers University bus routes, as well as parking and garbage and recycling collections?
City Council members began discussions on the idea Wednesday following an impact study presentation by Hasbrouck Heights-based DMR Architects. One design option calls for the conversion of George Street into a pedestrian mall that features year-round activity, possibly including outdoor ice skating.
It’s unclear if a timeframe has been set for a decision to be made on the proposal.
Closing the three-block area to vehicle traffic was first explored during the COVID pandemic to allow restaurants to safely stay open with outdoor dining in an area that could also host art shows, football watch parties and live music.

“We’re seeing a lot of municipalities exploring ways to encourage public gathering in ways that are reflective of their culture while supporting economic growth and sustainability,” said Francis Reiner, DMR Architects director of planning and development.
“In New Brunswick, we provided four options including a no-build which would keep the existing summer only closure, one-way traffic conversions for either vehicles only or buses only, and a complete closure to convert the area into a permanent pedestrian plaza,” said Reiner, a partner with the architecture firm.

Plans could provide for a central 24-foot-wide spine with outdoor seating and temporary Tivoli lighting during the spring, summer and fall months and year-round programming.
Nearby Metuchen has a Town Plaza where public events are held. Somerville has a pedestrian plaza on Division Street, and Bound Brook is in the process of building a pedestrian plaza.
