Alfred Cecil Leevy: A Beacon of Education and Service in Dominica
On November 15, 2023, the island of Dominica bid farewell to one of its most esteemed sons, Alfred Cecil Leevy, a distinguished educator and former Principal of the Dominica Grammar School (DGS). Born in Montserrat on October 16, 1940, Leevy, with Dominican roots, moved to Dominica at the tender age of four and went on to etch his name in the annals of the country’s educational history.
Early Life and Academic Pursuits
Leevy’s academic journey began at the DGS, where he later returned as a beacon of leadership. His intellectual pursuits took him beyond the island’s shores, earning him an Honours degree in geography from the University of Delhi. He further honed his skills through postgraduate studies in Public Administration in England and the United States.
Rise to Headship at DGS
Leevy’s teaching career was marked by his tenure at the DGS, where he eventually became the first local headmaster in the post-war era, succeeding a series of British headmasters. His leadership at the school was characterized by grace and courage during a time of significant cultural and educational shifts in Dominica.
Service Beyond Education
Apart from his educational work, Leevy was deeply involved in religious and community service. He served as an Elder and Sunday school teacher in his church and contributed to the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities. He also participated in the Gideon Ministry, reflecting his unwavering commitment to service.
The Writer and the Spiritual Guide
Leevy’s pen was as mighty as his educational influence. He was a prolific writer, publishing books of poetry and other works reflecting on life and spirituality. His wife, Dorothy, noted his mental decline following the stress of Hurricane Maria in 2017, but his faith remained unshaken. He often engaged in prayer, a testament to his unwavering spiritual commitment.
As Dominica mourns the loss of Alfred Cecil Leevy, his legacy of dedication to education, community service, and spiritual commitment remains. His life’s work stands as a beacon for future generations, illuminating the path of service, commitment, and intellectual pursuit.
