JR’s Bar in Dominica Closes After 16 Years; New Management to Take Over
After 16 years of operation, JR’s Bar on King George V Street in Dominica has permanently shuttered its doors. The bar, which had been a beloved staple in the community since 2008, succumbed to severe financial constraints and health difficulties faced by its owner, Joseph Raffoul.
Financial Struggles and Declining Footfall
The closure, Raffoul revealed, was largely due to a lack of financial support and dwindling customer footfall. The establishment, initially a joint venture between Raffoul and his late brother, ended up being operated solely by Raffoul and one part-time employee. Over the last five years, the business experienced its toughest times, with Raffoul describing the streets of Roseau as virtually deserted after 7 pm. This led to a significant decline in patronage, making it increasingly difficult for the bar to stay afloat amid escalating bills.
A Brush with Violence
In 2018, a violent incident added to the bar’s struggles when Raffoul was assaulted by a vagrant within the establishment. The attack resulted in a five-day intensive care stay for Raffoul, further complicating the operation of the business.
Memories, Gratitude, and a New Chapter
Despite the harsh realities, Raffoul expressed a deep sense of gratitude to his loyal patrons, both local and international. He cherishes the memories created over the years and is thankful for the support that kept the bar going as long as it did. As he steps down, a new chapter is set to begin on King George V Street, with a new proprietor preparing to take over the management of the location.
