Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica has announced considerable employment benefits stemming from the development of the international airport project. During an appearance on Kairi’s Heng Program, Skerrit relayed that over 300 local workers are currently directly employed by the project, with more positions poised to be filled in the near future.
Indirect Employment and Local Business Impact
Alongside direct employment, the project is ushering in indirect employment opportunities as well. Local businesses are witnessing a surge in sales due to the construction project’s demand for materials, food, and other goods. The economic ripple effect is palpable in communities like Wesley and Woodford Hill, where a rise in local commerce is being observed as workers migrate for job prospects.
Progressing On Schedule
The international airport project is progressing as planned with substantial excavation work being carried out. Skerrit underscored the significant investment in construction materials, noting an expenditure of over US$20 million on cement for soil compaction alone. This significant spend is indicative of the greater material needs to come during the actual construction of the runway and airport buildings.
Anticipation for 2024
Prime Minister Skerrit expressed optimism about the project’s progress. He anticipates that by the end of 2024, the shape of the runway will be more appreciable to observers, indicating significant progress in the project. The vision for the international airport, thus, continues to materialize, promising to transform Dominica’s employment landscape and local economy.
