In an upcoming debate at the Dominica House of Assembly, the Honorable Dr. Irving McIntyre, Minister for Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience, and Social Security, is to present a motion to secure a bank guarantee for a geothermal energy project. This project, under the banner of the Geothermal Power Company of Dominica (2023) Limited, a subsidiary of Ormat Technologies, Inc., signifies a crucial step towards sustainable development and climate resilience for Dominica.

Bank Guarantee for Sustainable Development

The bank guarantee, totaling EC$13.5 million, is intended to fund the construction of a 10-megawatt geothermal power plant in Laudat, Dominica. Upon successful completion, the plant is anticipated to bolster the island’s capacity for renewable energy, aligning with global efforts towards sustainable development. The government assures that, after 25 years of operation, the power plant will be transferred to the state without any financial burden.

Political Tensions Amid Progress

Despite this progress, the proposal has not been without controversy. Former opposition leader Lennox Linton has criticized the government’s lack of transparency regarding the performance risk tied to the geothermal project. He also questioned the wisdom of seeking this guarantee from the National Bank of Dominica, suggesting potential political and financial implications.
