Alfred Cecil Leevy: A Beacon of Education in Dominica Passes Away
Alfred Cecil Leevy, an esteemed trailblazer in Dominica’s education sector and the first native principal of the Dominica Grammar School (DGS), breathed his last on November 15, 2023. Aged 83, Leevy left behind a legacy of dedication, innovation, and profound impact on the national education system.
A Life Marked by Excellence
Born in Montserrat on October 16, 1940, Leevy migrated to Dominica at a tender age of four. His educational journey at the DGS was marked with distinction as he earned his Cambridge certificates with flying colors. His academic prowess secured him a place as a Commonwealth scholar, earning him a degree in geography from the prestigious University of Delhi.
A Pillar of Education and Public Service
Leevy’s tenure as principal of DGS came at a pivotal time in Dominica’s history during the 1970s. A period of substantial educational and societal transformation, Leevy played a key role in the shift towards local control of schools. His leadership style was marked by a commitment to excellence and a vision for empowering Dominican students. Post DGS, Leevy broadened his educational horizon, specializing in Public Administration. His expertise found him serving in various government roles, eventually retiring as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development.
A Life Beyond Professional Commitments
Leevy’s life was not confined to his professional achievements. He was a devout Evangelist, deeply immersed in the church community. He was a fervent supporter of the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities and was a passionate Gideon, distributing Bibles across the country. Leevy was also a prolific writer, publishing insightful books of poetry and reflective pieces on faith and societal concerns. Despite facing mental decline after the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017, Leevy’s commitment to his faith remained steadfast. He was often found in deep prayer, a testament to his unwavering faith until his final moments.
