Dominica Wage Review Call Amid Proposed Water Rate Hike

Dominica Union Leader Urges Wage Review Amid Water Rate Hike Proposal

In response to the proposed increase in water rates by the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company Limited (DOWASCO), Thomas Letang, the General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), has made a clarion call for a comprehensive salary review in both the public and private sectors. Bernard Ettinoffe, General Manager of DOWASCO, underscored the necessity of raising water rates to ensure the viability of the company and the integrity of Dominica’s water supply infrastructure. He cited the island’s unique topography, its small population base, and the current reliance on government subsidies, asserting that the present water rates are not sufficient to cover operational costs.

Pressing Need for Salary Reviews

Letang has stressed that any potential increase in water rates must be paralleled by a corresponding revision of salaries to safeguard the affordability for consumers. He advocates for the establishment of a safety net for those who might be unable to shoulder the increased financial burden. The proposal includes utilizing funds from the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program to provide assistance to those in need.

Minimum Wage Under Scrutiny

Adding to the urgency, Letang pointed out that the minimum wage in Dominica has not undergone revision for an extended period, in contrast to the recommended triennial review. This lack of timely reassessment could exacerbate the challenges faced by those earning the least in the face of rising living costs.

As Dominica grapples with the prospect of higher water rates, Letang’s call for a salary review highlights the broader implications on the cost of living and the well-being of the island’s residents. His proposal for a safety net, potentially funded by CBI resources, underscores the need for a balanced approach in addressing the economic realities of Dominica’s citizens.
