Alfred Leevy: Dominica Loses a Stalwart in Education
Alfred Leevy, an influential stalwart in Dominica’s education sector and the first native principal of Dominica Grammar School (DGS), passed away on November 15, 2023, at the age of 83. Born on the neighboring island of Montserrat, Leevy was raised by a Dominican mother and a Kittitian father who served as a police officer.
A Life Dedicated to Education
Moving to Dominica at the tender age of four, Leevy’s educational journey began at the DGS where he excelled, achieving the Cambridge School Certificate and the Cambridge Higher School Certificate. His early life was largely influenced by scholar Wilfred Pond, the author of Dominica’s national anthem, who served as a mentor and father figure to young Leevy.
Leevy’s commitment to education saw him return to DGS as a teacher after his studies in India. In the 1970s, amidst the rising clamor for independence and local control in educational institutions, Leevy stepped up to become the headmaster of DGS. His tenure was marked by a strong emphasis on academic excellence and the development of leadership skills among students.
Family and Faith
After marrying Dorothy Thomas, the couple was blessed with four children. Not content with his achievements in the educational arena, Leevy pursued further education and served in several government positions, retiring as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development.
A devout Evangelist, Leevy was deeply rooted in his church and actively participated in community organizations. His commitment to social causes was evident in his involvement with the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities and the Gideons International. An avid writer, Leevy published several works of poetry and books that reflected his strong faith and concerns about societal issues.
A Life Well-lived
Despite suffering a mental decline following Hurricane Maria in 2017, Leevy’s faith remained unshaken until the end. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy in Dominica’s educational landscape and his contributions to society will live on.
