Dominica Honors UK and Canada with Prestigious Sisserou Award for Climate Resilience Support

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has unveiled that Dominica will honor the United Kingdom and Canada with the esteemed Sisserou Award of Honour. This accolade is in recognition of their substantial contributions towards the island’s climate resilience efforts. Both nations have played a pivotal role in supporting Dominica’s ambitious goal to become the world’s first climate-resilient nation, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastation in 2017.

Building Back Better: UK and Canada’s Contributions

Following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Maria, the UK committed £50.7 million in grant funding to support critical infrastructure projects in Dominica. This funding aimed at enhancing the water sector and rehabilitating key roads, ensuring they are more resilient against future extreme weather events. Meanwhile, Canada announced a $9.25 million contribution towards the Disaster Recovery and Resilience Project. This initiative focuses on reconstructing primary schools, underpinning the importance of education in the nation’s recovery and resilience-building efforts.

Strengthening Climate and Economic Resilience

In addition to infrastructure projects, Canada’s pledge also supports broader efforts to fortify climate and economic resilience across the Caribbean. This includes a CAN$8.2-million project with the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to enhance the regional response mechanism. The UK and Canada’s investments align closely with Dominica’s vision of resilience, highlighting their commitment to not only aid in recovery but also to support sustainable development and disaster preparedness.

A Partnership Rooted in Solidarity and Support

The partnership between Dominica, the UK, and Canada exemplifies international solidarity and a shared commitment to tackling the challenges posed by climate change. Prime Minister Skerrit’s announcement to award the Sisserou Award of Honour to both countries underscores the deep appreciation for their unwavering support. It also marks a significant moment in Dominica’s journey towards achieving unparalleled resilience against the backdrop of increasing global environmental threats.

As Dominica strides forward, the contributions of the UK and Canada will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of its resilience narrative. This gesture of recognition not only celebrates the past efforts but also sets a precedent for future international cooperation in the face of climate adversity. With continued support and collaboration, Dominica’s vision of becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation moves closer to reality, serving as a beacon of hope and a model for others to follow.
