Suriname defeated Dominica’s National Senior Women’s Team on Wednesday as the two teams begin their campaign for the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup. The match took place at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium. Dominica is in Group A of League B together with Suriname, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda.
Despite best efforts, the Dominican team could not manage to score a goal, however, several saves by Dominican goalkeeper, Celia Gregoire, kept the Suriname team from scoring more goals. Coach of the Dominican team, Ronnie Gustav, said despite the defeat, the girls from the Nature Isle did their best.
“Well, still I have to commend the girls,” he said in a post-match press conference.
“I think the girls gave their best seeing that it is a short space of time and preparation with not having a league and not even having a chance to play a friendly game because I know for a fact that Suriname just had a friendly game against Barbados and to my knowledge they lost 1-0 to Barbados. So you could see their preparation with their team knowing their weaknesses and where their strengths are and make their adjustments.”
He stated that the lack of a friendly game by the Dominican team may have had an impact on them.
“We were not able to get any friendly matches and that is a major issue for us. Suriname got a few,” Gustav said.
He said the team is a work in progress and it will take a while for it to get where he wants it to be.
“We learned a lot from it (the match),” he remarked.
“We see where our weaknesses are and the adjustments we have to make going into the next game.”
Coach Hesron Jeroe of Suriname said that the win was important as it is good to win the first game played in a competition.
He said despite the win, his team could have done much better.
“I feel good because it is the first match that we play,” he remarked.
He said that after the first half, he encouraged his players to play the game faster and to score as many goals as possible.
“We made one goal in the first half and in the second half, I spoke to my players to play faster because it is a competition,” he stated.
Dominica will face Guyana on Sunday in Barbados as the quest continues for the Gold Cup.
