Decisive Response to Animal Feed Shortage in Dominica

Dominica’s Government Takes Decisive Action Amidst Animal Feed Shortage

In a crucial step aimed at addressing the severe shortage of animal feed plaguing the livestock subsector, the Government of Dominica, through its Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, is taking swift and decisive action. The scarcity, primarily triggered by high seas obstructing docking of shipping vessels on January 5th and 11th, has been further exacerbated by the delay in the feed shipment, originally scheduled for January 19th.

Navigating Through the Crisis

Responding to these challenges, the Ministry has been working in close collaboration with livestock farmers, guiding them on alternative feeding and management practices to mitigate the impact. January 15th saw an urgent meeting convened between the Ministry, animal feed suppliers, and the President of the Poultry and Livestock Growers Association. The purpose? To find immediate solutions and devise strategies to prevent future shortages.

Immediate Alleviation Measures and Long-Term Strategy

As an immediate measure to alleviate the situation, the Ministry has expedited an order for animal feed from a neighboring island. The delivery, expected by January 18th, will prioritize layer birds, which are currently most in need. Meanwhile, the Government is in the process of implementing a long-term strategy. This includes an investment in a local animal feed plant to ensure a stable feed supply.

Government’s Assurance to Farmers

The Ministry assures farmers of the Government’s commitment to promptly alleviate the situation. The importance of the livestock subsector in the nation’s food and nutrition security efforts is underlined. The Government is steadfast in its dedication to safeguarding the livelihoods of Dominica’s livestock farmers during this period of shortage.
