New Brunswick Center Club Plans for Clothing Drive | Campus & Community

The New Brunswick Center Club is hosting a clothing drive in the lobby from the end of February to the end of March to provide professional clothing for students who may not have access to such items that need them.

Marisol Aguirre-Torres, President of the New Brunswick Center Club, said they are hosting this event because many college students are finding their way into adulting by getting ready to begin their careers and doing job interviews.

Torres said, “I know that not a lot of people have a professional wardrobe because it’s something you have to build up.”

Pauline Shambo, Advisor of the New Brunswick Center Club, said, “So, what we’re going to do to kick it off initially is to do a survey in a classroom and hopefully the faculty will help us do that to say to students one or two questions.”

She said the questions would be related to the types of clothing students would want and clothing sizes.

Shambo said, “Once we get the clothing donation in, we’ll separate them and my idea is to do a pop-up boutique right here on campus and then do a walk-way fashion show.”

“Maybe we’ll use a room as well to sort of strut our stuff along the hallway and in one of the selected rooms and invite the students to come in and they can pick and choose,” she said.

Shambo said, “We have the cupboard, which is the food pantry. So, I’m thinking that we would probably display the clothing in that area because it’s kind of closed off and it has a nice glass exposure to it.”

She said the purpose of doing this is so that students could begin to view the clothing as they approached the date they were going to do the fashion show, which they are thinking about planning before spring break.

Shambo said she also hopes to give some tips to students about how to dress when it comes to certain professional clothing items in their career interviews and let students know they don’t have to spend so much money to look professional for a job or interview.

Torres said they will probably have a large donation bin around the front area of the lobby.

Shambo said she’s excited to host this clothing drive because she loves fashion.

Torres said, “I feel like when you grow up and you kind of have to build a wardrobe you might be worrying about the voluntary aspect about it, finding clothes you could actually buy.”

She said she feels as though this will be a good start for students to build a professional wardrobe.

Bridget Perez, a first-year student, said she thinks it’s great that they are hosting this drive for students who can’t afford professional clothing.
