By Horace Palacio: Yesterday, the Caribbean experienced a day of heightened seismic activity, with two notable earthquakes occurring near Dominica and its neighboring islands, including Martinique and Guadeloupe. This information comes from a report by Caribbean Loop News, referencing data provided by the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center (UWI SRC).
The later of the two tremors, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake, shook the region at approximately 4:48 pm local time. This quake had a significant depth, reaching 114 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface. The UWI SRC’s Automatic Earthquake Location identified the epicenter 20 kilometers southeast of Roseau, Dominica, also affecting areas 65 kilometers northwest of Fort-de-France, Martinique, and 124 kilometers south-southeast of Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.
Earlier in the day, at around 11:42 am local time, the region experienced a 3.8 magnitude earthquake. This earlier seismic event originated from a depth of 97 kilometers. According to the UWI SRC’s data, this quake’s epicenter was located 40 kilometers northeast of Roseau, Dominica, with impacts felt 97 kilometers north of Fort-de-France, Martinique, and 100 kilometers southeast of Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.
These consecutive earthquakes underscore the Caribbean’s ongoing geological activity, a region known for its seismicity due to the interactions of various tectonic plates. Although there have been no reports of damage or injuries, these events serve as a reminder of the natural disaster risks faced by these island nations.
Local authorities urge residents in the affected areas to stay alert and adhere to safety guidelines provided by disaster management agencies. The UWI SRC continues to monitor seismic activities in the Caribbean, offering vital information for both disaster preparedness and emergency response initiatives.
