FREDERICTON, N.B. — Of the 4,642 babies born in New Brunswick between Jan. 1 and Dec. 15, parents chose the names Liam and Olivia more than any other.

According to the N.B. government, the monikers tied as the most popular baby names in the province this year, followed by Theodore and Emma,

Other popular baby names this year were Noah, Benjamin, James, Charlotte, Oliver, William, Jacob and Violet.

“I want to congratulate everyone who welcomed a new addition to their family in 2023,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Mary Wilson. “Our children are our future, and we must make decisions today that will help build a stronger province and economy for future generations.”

Liam was the second most popular name — right behind Noah — in 2022 when there were 6,187 babies born.

Liam, the shortened version of the Irish name Uilliam, meaning “helmet of will”, was also among the most popular names in Nova Scotia in 2023, as was Olivia, which was its top name in 2022.
