Seguin police, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s deputies battle for bragging rights, raise money for Blue Santa | Alert

For 17 years, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s deputies have gone toe to toe with Seguin police officers for bragging rights and a trophy.

On Sunday, the Seguin Police Department captured the win over the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office in the annual Battle of the Badge softball game at the 4-Plex on Nelda Street.

The exhibition game is part of the BLS (Blue Line Strong) Softball Tournament that raises money for the Blue Santa Program.

“We do this to make sure that the kids that can’t have a Christmas will have a Christmas,” tournament director and Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Deputy James Rosas said. “We come together with a bunch of great teams from the area to play softball for the kids. It has grown every year with the help of all of the teams out here.”

The two teams cracked jokes at the other’s expense throughout the game, bringing a bigger sense of camaraderie, Seguin Police Cpl. John Crady said.

“It is always a fun competition between us and the sheriff’s department, especially when we win two years in a row,” he said. “It feels great to beat these guys. Can’t wait to see what happens next year.”

While the two law enforcement agencies work side by side on a daily basis, having the opportunity to compete for fun helps build their working relationships, Rosas said.

“It is the camaraderie that we have with the PD and the sheriff’s office,” he said. “Also there’s the bragging rights when we take the win. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the win this year, but there is always next year.”

But in the end, the real winners are the children, Crady said.

“We get to play against the sheriff’s office while also raising money to donate to Blue Santa to help out the kids in the community,” he said.
