New Brunswick Gets Federal Money To Hire More Police Officers

The city of New Brunswick just received $987,102 from the U.S. Department of Justice to hire eight new police officers.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The city of New Brunswick just received $987,102 from the U.S. Department of Justice to hire eight new police officers.

The funding is provided through the federal Department of Justice’s COPS Hiring Program that supports the hiring and retention of law enforcement.

Carteret will receive $625,000 to hire five new police officers as part of the same funding.

Additionally, the New Jersey Department of Public Safety will receive $3,787,301 through the COPS Anti-Heroin Task Force Program. This is federal money that goes directly to local police districts to investigate the distribution of heroin, fentanyl or carfentanil, or to the unlawful distribution of prescription opioids.

“With the acceptance of $987,102, we continue to bolster our law enforcement efforts by hiring new police officers,” said New Brunswick Mayor James Cahill. “With these additional officers, we continue taking significant steps towards ensuring the security and peace of mind of our residents. Together, we will continue to build a safer and stronger future for our city.”
