Aarit Hundi scored a first-half goal on an assist from Constantino Villano as fifth-seeded South Brunswick escaped with a first-round Central Jersey, Group 4 boys soccer shootout win over 12-seed Sayreville after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods couldn’t break a 1-1 tie.
South Brunswick didn’t find the goal until scoring all five penalty kicks to take the shootout 5-3. South Brunswick’s record moved to 10-6-2 this fall and will visit Monroe in a quarterfinal game.
Will Garnet scored with five-minutes left in regulation to erase a deficit that had lasted nearly 70 minutes and force overtime. Sayreville is 8-5-5 on the season.

No. 11/2-Howell 4, 15-Northern Burlington 0
Howell — No. 11 in the NJ.com Top 20 — showed its balance and depth as four different players contributed to the scoring column in a 4-0 home win. Howell will host 10-seed Manalapan when the tournament resumes with a quarterfinal-round game.
Bryce Ocholla, Tye Maser, Marcello Romano and Nicholas Turturro had one goal each as Howell split its scoring with two in each half. Howell improved to 11-2-2 overall.
Northern Burlington saw its record fall to 6-13 this fall.
10-Manalapan 2, at 7-New Brunswick 1
Jon Luz and Luca Marano had a goal each as Manalapan took to the road to spring an upset in New Brunswick. Michael Pepe and Tyler Kats added assists.
Matteo Paolillo stopped seven shots in the win to raise Manalapan’s record to 9-6-1. Manalapan visits two-seed Howell in a quarterfinal game.
New Brunswick fell to 9-7-1 overall.

Antonino Reitano scored a second-half goal as Old Bridge sprung the biggest upset of the first round, taking down Long Branch. Reitano scored off a pass from Christopher Liberal.
Liberal also found time to stop seven shots in the Old Bridge goal. Old Bridge raised its record to 6-10-3 for the fall. Old Bridge takes its tour on the road to face six-seed East Brunswick.
Carlos Rodas-Maldonado had five saves but didn’t see any offensive support as Long Branch fell to 12-5-2.
6-East Brunswick 3, 11-Freehold Township 0
Max Barsanti stopped five shots to record the shutout as East Brunswick moved on to a quarterfinal game. It was the second shutout of the season as East Brunswick improved to 10-6-1.
Maxim Andreyev, Alex Vazquez and Bryan Sousa divvied up the scoring equally. Ryan Berg handed out two assists. East Brunswick will host 14-seed Old Bridge in a quarterfinal.
Freehold Township saw its record fall to 6-11-1.
