Dominica’s Health Minister Cassanni Laville recently highlighted the alarming prevalence of prostate cancer among men in the country.
Based on 2019 data, prostate cancer-related deaths in the Caribbean island stood at 39.2 per 100,000 population.
This daunting statistic places Dominica at the forefront among 35 countries in the sub-region, leading the list in terms of mortality rates due to this particular type of cancer.
Laville emphasized that the numbers necessitate urgent and decisive initiatives to curb the growing crisis.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Dominican government is actively seeking assistance and collaboration.

Collaborative efforts underway
Efforts to counteract the trend are already in motion, with the government engaging with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).
The partnership aims to bring in consultants who specialize in developing comprehensive cancer programs, particularly focusing on prostate cancer.
Developing standard procedures
He said that earlier this year, consultations with various stakeholders were initiated.
He said that their expertise will aid in the development of standard operating procedures for breast cancer and prostate cancer screening.
He added that the focus will also expand to include other cancers.
Public sensitization campaign to follow
He further shared that upon finalizing the standard operating procedures, a widespread sensitization campaign is slated to launch.
Targeting both the general public and healthcare professionals, the campaign is designed to underline the importance of regular cancer screening.
Empowering through knowledge
Minister Laville is committed to ensuring the Dominican populace is well-equipped with knowledge.
By disseminating essential information about prostate cancer, he shared that the aim is to empower individuals to take control of their health, making informed decisions that align with their best interests.
