Power cuts temporarily shut down Bellevue Chopin Credit Union

The frequent power cuts being experienced in Dominica are taking its toll on businesses with the Bellevue Chopin branch of the Grand Bay Credit Union announcing that it will be shutting down temporarily while it searches for alternative power. In a notice on Monday, October 2, the credit union said it will be closed from Tuesday, October 3 until further notice.

“Dear members, due to the frequent power outages being experienced in our area, the Bellevue Chopin branch will be closed from Tuesday 3rd October 2023 until further notice,” it said.

“We are currently sourcing an alternative power source and will reopen to the public as soon as possible.”

It encouraged members to visit the main office in Lalay, Grand Bay, or use its online platform to conduct business.

“Management and staff deeply apologizes for the inconvenience caused,” the notice added. For weeks now, power cuts have become a daily occurrence on the island. Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC), the sole provider of electricity here, blames these outages on its “Capacity Management Program.”

Spokespersons for the company stated that this is due to aging generators, a drop in hydropower because of the extended dry season and in recent days damage to one of its pipelines in Trafalgar.
