Dominica records 15 road fatalities so far for 2023

A total of 15 road fatalities have been reported in Dominica for the year so far. The announcement came from Superintendent of Police Belgrove Charles.

“To date, the number of fatalities we have had through accidents [is] 15,” he said. “All of them males. Four of the fatalities are motorcycles, three are pedestrians and one is a cyclist.”

According to him, 15 fatal accidents for the year are too many.

Charles took the opportunity to urge the public to wear their helmets.

“As part of our function, the protection of life and property and the prevention and detection of crime, I take this opportunity to again, urge the public to wear their helmets,” he stated.

He continued, “If you take a look, you will see the motorcyclists riding around and almost 90 percent of them are without helmets.”

This Charles said is very sad, because when they are involved in accidents and that part of their body gets hit–that is the head–it is likely that they will succumb to their injuries.

“We want to urge them to wear their helmet, because the cost of the helmet and the cost of life you cannot match up the two, but you have to protect your life,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, Charles is also urging the public to wear a seatbelt when riding in a vehicle.

“We sometimes see that little children are in the front seat of the car without even a seatbelt or in a car seat,” he remarked.

”This is wrong and anyone found contravening this law or regulation can face the penalty of $250 and imprisonment for two years, but we are advising you for your own safety to wear the seatbelts.”
