By Horace Palacio: A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Dominica and Martinique early on New Year’s Eve, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center (UWI SRC).
The tremor, recorded at 7:31 am local time, was centered 95 km east of Roseau, Dominica, and 98 km northeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique.
Residents in the affected areas reported feeling the quake, but there were no immediate reports of significant damage.
The UWI SRC continues to monitor the situation, providing updates as necessary.
Despite the quake, New Year’s Eve celebrations in the region are expected to continue with heightened awareness.
