FRANKLIN, NJ — One man was arrested and another remains at large in connection with the a homicide of Artis Young, 46, of Franklin Township in December 2023.
Andrew Mumby, 47, of Remsen Avenue in New Brunswick was arrested on Feb. 7 and authorities are still searching for Daniel Matthews, 44, of Brooklyn, New York, said Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald, Somerset CountyProsecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr., and Franklin TownshipPublic Safety Director Quovella M. Maeweather.
At around 6:23 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, Franklin Township Police got a missing person report from a family member regarding Young. The family reported Young was last seen on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023.
Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department found that Young had plans to meet with Matthews in Franklin Township on Dec. 29, 2023, said McDonald.
During the early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, a man, who was later identified as Young, was found dead in Brooklyn, New York, according to authorities.
On Jan. 3, Franklin Township Police Department detectives were notified of Young’s death. An autopsy was conducted by the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office which ruled the manner of Young’s death as homicide.
An investigation by Franklin Township detectives along with detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigation Unit found that Mumby and Matthews were identified as suspects in the death of Young which occurred in Franklin Township, said McDonald.
Following the homicide, Mumby and Matthews reportedly took Young’s remains to the location in Brooklyn, New York where Young was found.
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Mumby was arrested in New Brunswick without incident and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree disturbing or desecrating human remains, second-degree conspiracy to disturb or desecrate human remains, third-degree hindering prosecution and third-degree hindering the prosecution of another.
Mumby was taken to the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing in the matter.
Matthews has also been charged in this case with first-degree murder, second-degree disturbing or desecrating human remains, second-degree conspiracy to disturb or desecrate human remains, third-degree hindering prosecution and third-degree hindering the prosecution of another but remains at large.
Matthews has ties to the Franklin Township area as well as Brooklyn, New York, and Bronx, New York. Authorities are asking for any information that may lead to the whereabouts of Matthews.
McDonald thanked detectives from the New York Police Department, 75th Precinct and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Newark Field Office – Branchburg RA, for their assistance with this investigation.
